The One That Got Away

Lookin’ for romancin’
when I saw you dancin’
like a vision you were standing there
with your western shirt tied off at the waist
and a little dark flip at the end of your hair
Your hips they were wigglin’
the rest of you was jigglin’
but only in the very best way
Well, I know it’s not polite to stare
but I could not look away

When I finally worked up the nerve
to come and say, "Hi,"
you were standing with some jerk
who looked to me like he’s 14 feet high

But that didn’t stop me
although he might drop me
I knew I had to take a chance
I’d just bide my time and have a drink
and wait for that moment
to ask you to dance
When 3 hours go by
I’m feeling mighty high
my head is all afloat in beer
I looked around; your man was gone
I thought that I was in the clear

Your eyes said, "Hello..."
your whole body was talkin’
I thought I was so cool
if only I had seen
your boyfriend come walkin’

Well, I called you, "Baby,"
and you looked like maybe
to you that might be pleasin’
but then my head went, "Pop!"
and I was dropped
by that ton of bricks that fell on my chin
When I finally came to—
my face all black and blue—
they said, "Her man has took her away"
Well, I shook my head and I said,
"Aw, shucks!" for the one that got away
Yeah, I spit out my teeth and I said,
"Aw, shucks!" for the one that got away

Quillan Roe: vocals, acoustic guitar
Mike Brady: electric guitar, vocals
Jeff Tranberry: big bass
Rev. Matthew Marohl: pedal steel

Connections: Quillan Roe and Mike Brady obviously both have solo selections on this collection. Mike also was a member of Florida, and is a member of First Prize Killers. Jeff Tranberry appears on both Mike and Quillan’s solo projects. Rev. Matthew Marohl was a full fledged member at one point, and still occasionally appears on stage with AC. Erik Douglas Tasa (see tracks 2 and 8) appears elsewhere on the album.

The One You’re Closest To

It’s easier to leave
than be left behind
I’m beginning to see
you didn’t intend to be so unkind
I’ve considered putting
my faith in doubt
Now that it seems
everything else is running out
It’s not the next move
It’s just a new year
we’re stumbling through
Am I what you want
Or am I just the one you’re closest to
It’s not enough to just
like having me around
If I tell you the truth
will it let you down

They don’t list personelle for individual tracks, but here it is for the album:
Brad Augustine: accordion, piano
Ryan Huber Scheife: bass
John Jerry: drums
Dan Richmond: vocals, acoustic guitar, baritone
Aaron Schmidt: trumpet, piano, vocals
Steve Yernberg: guitar, banjo, piano, baritone, vocals

Connections: As I mentioned, The Ashtray Hearts are behind the Apartment Music sampler, which brought many of these artist to my attention. They also organized the “Heartbreak and Harmony” shows at various clubs around the Twin Cities, which brought some of the Apartment Music artists to the same stage. Quillan Roe appears elsewhere on the album singing back up.

Mike's Country Song

You can't have all my time, cause it's not mine to give
gotta work eight hours every day
Then I'll sleep seven more, fifteen out of twenty-four
doesn't leave much time for love

Quillan Roe: Banjo, Vocal
Mike Brady: Guitar, Vocal
Jeff Tranberry: Bass
Dan Gerber: Spoons

Connections: This is the album that introduced me to my favorite local band, and I have 44 to thank. I was given the album as a sample when I met with the rep from Precision Powerhouse about manufacturing Free Land Wall. 44 almost played on the same bill with Accident Clearinghouse at the Turf Club, but a certain bass player had to go and break his arm. One more connection, David Campbell, who is a current member of Accident Clearinghouse under the pseudonym Raenaldo Moon, is also Manager of Operations for The Hopefuls label 2024 Records, as well as host of the local music show “Homegrown” on KQRS.

Man the Swirl of Color

Wash you face in the basin I made for you
(it’s cooked clay modeled on a wheel).
Where are the crude little postcards that I drew
and the imaginary map?

My credit at the craft store is running out
and I’m running out of paint.
There is a scent to the cans and it’s spilling out
all over walls, and in the drain.

I don’t think you think about me

Through the lenses of lonely girls
who man the swirl of color
there’s a winter, that you will see,
is warmer than the summer.

Move your eyes to the play pit for you
I drew a lake, it’s right below your steak.
And all the sick nights I turned out all the lights
are coming back

I don’t think you think about me

Mike Brady: guitars, bass, drums and vocals
Mike Andrew: vocals
Brock Davis: vocals

Connections: If you haven’t figured it out already, Mike is in Accident Clearinghouse. He is also a member of Florida (track 9). Elsewhere on the album Jeff Tranberry (Accident Clearinghouse) appears on bass for one song.

Little Sunrise

She rides like a little sunrise settling into a nice little girl
Tucking in her own little girl she knows cant wait around all night
And the moon is high on a lazy sky
Slipping into the subtle way she's in charge of her own little payday
Starting out another new workday she cant finish up by 5
And the sun is high on a busy sky
Sitting out to see the siren turn around
When the bell hits you, you finally hear the sound
In the summer we will have a good time
With the summer wind starts coming up, coming up
And the earth is forced slipping off it's course
And her room is outside
Step inside her door

Peter Robelia: bass
Kevin Riach: drums, vocals
Tony Mogelson: guitar, vocals
Mike Brady: vocals, guitar
Mark Mallman: electric piano

Connections: Mike is, of course in Accident Clearinghouse. Kevin was in, and still occasionally appears with, Accident Clearinghouse. Dan, I am not sure if you’ve ever heard of this, but Mark Mallman is the guy that performs the “longest rock song ever written” every year at the Turf Club. It clocks in at over 52 hours.

Griddle-Cake Joey

I went down 'long Chickasaw way
I found my Granny sittin' in the hay
She was sittin' there and sittin' there and sittin' there all day
She says, "I'm waitin' for Griddle-Cake Joey"
Griddle-Cake
He's Griddle-Cake Joey
Now Griddle-Cake Joey, the flap-jack eatin' king
from Tupelo to Kentucky and everywheres in between
When I first met him he was on stack six
Maple syrup a'flowin' and of course a side of grits
So I asked him his secret, how does he pack 'em down?
He says, "I butter my finger and then I go to town"
And my Granny was a'slappin' on her knee
just a'rootin' and a'tootin' for Griddle-Cake Joey

Q: Acoustic Guitar, Vocal
M: Banjo, Vocal
J: Dog-house Bass, Vocal
R: Washboard, Vocal
Rayfus Moon: Jug
Smilin' Hoss Moon: Spoons

Holiday

I passed out
On someone’s couch, in someone’s house
Woke up in the afternoon
To the sound of the boulevard
Hey, look outside
It’s New Year’s Day, the Fourth of July
But inside, no fireworks
Although it’s filled with punks, the fuses refuse to burn

It’s a holiday, until tomorrow
A hundred miles away and I’m full of sorrow
I’m prone to steal, but not afraid to borrow

You passed out
Invitations to your show
I dressed up in my fines suit
Didn’t know if I should go
Bought a bottle of Beam
Man, it’s a force field from this scene
I heard you tried to hit on me
It’s such a pity I was too damn drunk to see

It’s a holiday, until tomorrow
A hundred miles away and I’m full of sorrow
I’m prone to steal, but not afraid to borrow

Darren Jackson: Guitar, Vocals
Erik Appelwick: Guitar, Vocals
Heath Henjum: Bass
Eric Fawcett: Drums
John Hermanson: Keyboards

Connections: Darren Jackson is also (in) Kid Dakota, see track 10. When I heard this song on our way tot he doctor’s office I was sure the voice was that of Jackson, but it was clear that the music was not Kid Dakota. After the song, the DJ announced that it was The Olympic Hopefuls (as they were known at the time). When we got home, I looked them up on the Internet, and sure enough there was Darren Jackson. I stopped at The Electric Fetus later that week to purchase The Fuses refuse to Burn. Erik Applewick also sometimes appears with Kid Dakota. These two, as well as the other members, also appear in many other big, local bands.

Neutral Angel Of Fargo

This is another one I had to transcribe on my own, let me know if you think there are mistakes.

Driven on by non-drivers
at their best still mere riders
Neutral Angel of Fargo
favor for the grace that saves
lusthouse love and broken girls
Friday's wine is more a curse

She's sleeping on a fence between
Jesus is love and a substance scene
But all your star signs and alcohol
won’t keep you warm from the cold shoulder of an early fall
won’t keep you warm from the cold shoulder of an early fall

Neutral Angel I apologize
for the stained up nurture, a drug reacquired
It's the over killjoy of something new
that turns a sick shape to a gone wrong view
If February is the last I hear
await your summer days out incase an early fall brings you here
await your summer days out incase an early fall brings you here

The only personnel I know of is Erik Douglas Tasa

Connections: Tasa also appears on Accident Clearinghouse albums as well as Quillan’s solo album.

City Girl

I had to transcribe these myself, so if you see anything you disagree with, let me know.

City Girl,
oh, why do you bother to light up the world
City Girl
even heaven's afraid to take down your parade
What have you really gained
City Girl
400 sparks 5000 heart shaped drums in every color that you once confused for love
City girl,
I beg you to bother with only a few
City Girl,
be certain that all they want you to do
is light a you
City Girl
400 sparks 5000 heart shaped drums in every color that you once confused for love
City Girl
400 sparks 5000 heart shaped drums in every color that you once confused for love

Connections: Besides the Apartment Music thing, not much. Brian Tighe is also in Twin Cities band The Hang Ups.

The Buckeye Tree

The Sun was shining, it was so sunny
and through the trees blew a warm breeze
I hugged my Baby up close to me
underneath the buckeye tree

I said, "Now, listen, listen to me
"it all is right, as right can be
"so stay right here, right here with me
"underneath the buckeye tree"

She said, "Now, listen, listen to me
"You know my love it runs deeply
"but the city is calling me
"from underneath the buckeye tree"

When I awoke, awoke did me
there was no one close to me
I was all alone, alone was me
underneath the buckeye tree

Quillan Roe guitar and vocals
Angel Erni vocals
Erik Douglas Tasa lead guitar, harmonica

Connections: Quillan Roe, as has been mentioned, is also in Accident Clearinghouse. Erik Douglas Tasa is also in Spurcut Factory Rider (see track 8). Appearing elsewhere on the album are Jeff Tranberry and Mike Brady, both core members of Accident Clearinghouse. Kevin Riach, Raynaldo Moon and Cletus Moon, all onetime/sometime members of Accident Clearinghouse.

Ten Thousand Lakes

I’m in Minnesota again for the winter
I’m in Minnesota again for the winter
I didn’t come for ice fishin’
I didn’t come for duck huntin’
I’m not Scandinavian
Or in search of Paul Bunyan
I came for the taper
I came for the tapeworm
Well I came to get better

I’m in Minnesota again for the winter
The thought of ten thousand lakes makes me feel smaller
I didn’t come for ice fishin’
I didn’t come for duck huntin’
I’m not Scandinavian
Or in search of Paul Bunyan
I’m no fan of the Vikings
Or sub-zero windchills
Or drifts bigger than buildings
Or runnin’ on treadmills

But I’m optimistic
But I’m off to Mystic
‘Cause I’m feeling lucky

I’m in Minnesota again for the winter
The thought of ten thousand lakes makes me feel smaller
The thought of ten thousand lakes makes me feel weaker

Darren Jackson: guitar, vocals, organ, Rhodes, piano
Christopher McGuire: drum set, percussion
Erik Appelwick: guitar, organ
Zak Sally: Bass

Connections: I think we’ve covered this, but Darren Jackson and Erik Applewick are also in The Hopefuls. Zak Sally is also in the fairly successful Low (I’ve heard them several times on The Current).
